The art of giving is something businesses often forget when interacting with (potential) clients. You might be focused on achieving your sales targets or making the right deals, but are you aware that giving something extra or for free makes rather a positive impact on your stakeholders and yourself? In this blog, we talk about why giving things away is beneficial for your business.

The psychology of giving

Dr. Robert B. Cialdini, writer of the New York Times bestseller Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, talks about the beneficial impact of giving away free services or products. It creates a sense of reciprocity. By nature, people feel obliged to buy something from you or choose your service if you give something for free. Humans don’t like to feel like they are in debt to others. It also is a favourable act to do something for someone else because you pull the empathy card.

Giving away locally

Investing in your local community is highly rewarding. Not only does it give you a good feeling, but it also creates a moment to set a spotlight on your business in a positive way. Maybe your business can sponsor a local football team or sports club, or look to volunteer for a local charitable cause. It shows that your business is willing to give something back to the community and heightens the chance locals choose your business instead of your competitors.

One of our firms, KJG, also likes to invest in their local community. Besides helping clients grow their businesses, KJG is also committed to supporting local charitable causes. Staff regularly raise significant sums for charities such as Forever Manchester, Manchester Mind and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, as well as volunteering their time to help out at organisations such as children’s charity the Wood Street Mission.
