People sometimes find it challenging to keep to their New Year’s resolutions. Some people don’t even like the idea of sticking to resolutions. After all, more often than not they are put aside after a few weeks or months at best. This might be the case for exercising, meditating, not drinking et cetera. But what about business goals? Setting new goals for your business when a new year starts can be a great way of turning the tide and taking your business to the next level. To help you kickstart your New Year, we have compiled a list of 3 New Year’s goals you can set yourself as a business owner.

Goal #1: Don’t be afraid to delegate more

Your business is your everything. We understand that it can be hard to trust others to take care of business. No one knows what’s best for your business better than you, right? However, if you want your business to grow, you need to start trusting the people on your team to take over specific tasks. Try to delegate more, as this is essential for you to be able to have more time to think about finding innovative ways to grow and expand your business.

Goal #2: Invest in good long-term planning

Time to turn your goals into concrete action items! Some people are planners by nature, but some are not at all. Good planning is the best accompaniment to realising your goals and resolutions. Make a to-do list for each day for short-term planning, for each employee. You give each task a description, a date, a time and an executor. This way, every morning before you start, you can clearly see what you have to do that day. For long-term planning: get insight into which months will be busier. For example, if you know March and April are busy months for you and you usually have a lot of appointments during those months, make sure that you don’t have to do any side activities then.

Goal #3: Get more physical activity during workdays

It’s a well-known fact that we sit too much and it’s not exactly good for our health. Make a conscious effort to move more on workdays. And the great thing is, this goal can be both personal ánd business-related. More exercise is good for your physical health, which will reflect on your work as well. Not only is this better for your health, but it often makes you just a little more productive!

Make your goals SMART

What are SMART goals? Setting SMART goals means you can clarify your ideas, use your time and resources productively, focus your efforts and increase your chances of achieving your overall business goals. SMART stands for:

  • Specific: make your goals clear and specific. This allows you to focus your efforts.
  • Measurable: it’s important to have measurable goals, as this allows you to track progress.
  • Achievable: set goals that are realistic and attainable.
  • Relevant: your goals should matter to you and your business; make them align with other relevant goals.
  • Time-bound: set a target date for each of your goals, set a deadline you can work towards.

How to keep goals and resolutions

The reason why a goal often fails is that it is not realistic. So you have to make it attainable for yourself. Also, do not keep your resolutions a secret. Of course, it can be scary to share them with someone else, because if you don’t reach your goal, the other person will know too. But involving someone else in your goal can be very motivating! This also relates to the following: try to achieve goals together with someone. This sometimes works even better than just telling someone about your goal. Achieving a goal together with someone makes it possible to support, motivate and inspire each other when the going gets tough!
